For many years, neither "apoptosis" nor "programmed cell death" was a highly cited term. Two discoveries brought cell death from obscurity to a major field of research: identification of components of the cell death control and effector mechanisms, and linkage of abnormalities in cell death to human disease, in particular cancer. Programmed cell death ligand-1 (PD-L1) is an important target for immunotherapy. It is known that PD-L1 is overexpressed in BC; a clinical trial involving PD-L1 immune checkpoint inhibitors in advanced BC is ongoing.
Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is a process akin to cellular containment and cleaning. An evolutionarily conserved cascade of enzyme

A human cell can replicate itself about 40 to 60 times before the DNA or other parts of it becomes so damaged it can no ‘Apoptosis, programmed cell death, is a physiological process required for normal development and tissue homeostasis in multicellular organisms.’ ‘Although the concept of a programmed death has thus existed for a long time, the term programmed cell death was not used before the 1960s.’ First, Weismann was emphasizing death, per se, as the "beneficial" quality that caused evolution of the death mechanism. Other theorists pointed out that few animals in the wild live long enough to die of old age and that therefore a programmed death mechanism would very seldom actually operate. For many years, neither "apoptosis" nor "programmed cell death" was a highly cited term. However, T cell function and persistence over time could be hampered by the activation of inhibitory costimulatory pathways, such as programmed death 1 (PD1)/programmed death ligand 1, leading to T cell exhaustion and providing tumor cells with an escape mechanism from immunosurveillance. In addition, the lack of positive costimulation at the tumor Programmed cell death protein 1, also known as PD-1 and CD279, is a protein on the surface of cells that has a role in regulating the immune system's response to the cells of the human body by down-regulating the immune system and promoting self-tolerance by suppressing T cell inflammatory activity. This prevents autoimmune diseases, but it can also prevent the immune system from killing cancer cells.

Apoptosis, known as programmed cell death, is a carefully controlled, energy-dependent process of cell death. Induction of apoptosis results in a cascade of characteristic biochemical events resulting in changes in cellular morphology and death. evolved (adapted) than older animals. Weismann's idea was that programmed death assisted the evolution process by removing older animals from the population and thus freeing resources (food supply, habitat) for younger, more evolved, This type of cell death is referred to as "programmed cell death." Until about year 2000, apoptosis was believed to be the sole mode of programmed cell death, at least in mammals.
Thus, the selective blockade of these inhibitory molecules is an attractive approach to cancer immunotherapy. The programmed death-1 receptor (PD-1, CD279)

PCD is carried out in a biological process, which usually confers advantage during an organism's life-cycle.
